In order to live a healthy and active life, everyone's economic and physical access to sufficient and healthy food and sufficient and clean water at all times is expressed as food security. The right to access sufficient, safe and healthy food easily and sustainably is one of the most fundamental rights of every person. While ensuring food security, the supply of food in the “safe food” chain is very important, and ensuring food safety is a must in order to protect public health. Food Safety refers to “the state of the food accessed being free from all kinds of physical, chemical and biological damage, healthy and beneficial to the body”.
Food Safety is the totality of measures taken to eliminate possible damages in food. Therefore, there is a high need for expert personnel to take part in all processes (production, storage, transportation, sales) until the food reaches the consumer.

The interdisciplinary Food Safety Master’s program aims to train experts who will bring solutions to the existing problems in the field of food safety and to provide its graduates with a multidisciplinary perspective with application-oriented projects within this scope.
The Department of Food Safety employs academic staff from the departments of Food Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Chemistry.
The opening of the Interdisciplinary Food Safety Thesis Master's Program within the Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University Graduate School of NAtural and Applied Sciences was approved by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) at the Executive Board Meeting dated 28.08.2024. As of the 2024-2025 Academic Year, 3 students are enrolled in the program.
The Food Safety Master's Program is a master's program focusing on food safety issues in the food industry. Since Food Safety covers all stages of the food chain, all institutions and organizations that produce, store, transport, sell, and serve food can be listed as places with career opportunities. Graduates of the Food Safety master's program can find the opportunity to work in food businesses, food control organizations, research laboratories, and universities.
The Food Safety graduate program aims to provide higher education opportunities for students from interdisciplinary branches such as Food Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Aquaculture Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Bioengineering, Food Technology (Undergraduate), Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Nutrition and Dietetics, Food and Beverage Management, Gastronomy and Culinary Arts, Veterinary Medicine.
Students who complete the Food Safety Thesis Master's Program are entitled to receive a Master of Science degree.
